Title: Conservation Technician

Supervisor: Head of Collections & Conservation

Number of available positions: 1

Term: 40 hours per week

Duration: 6 Months/1,040 hours (April 1st – September 30th, 2026)

Pay Range: $20-$22 per hour

Housing: Housing is included; if needed

Benefits: Not Eligible

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead Glyptal removal efforts on skeletal specimens in the in-situ Bonebed and collections.
  • In consultation with Head of Collections & Conservation, develops plan of action for Glyptal removal of novel in-situ specimens (i.e. ‘Murray’, ‘Napoleon’, ‘Elvis’, etc.)
  • Trains and assists in supervision of interns on Glyptal removal in the in-situ Bonebed
  • In consultation with Head of Collections & Conservation, catalog and relabel conserved (Glyptal removed) in-situ specimens
  • Assists Research Staff as needed with training and supervision of Museum Interns and Ice Age Explorers
  • Assist as needed with tusk rehousing in collections and in prep lab
  • Interact with museum patrons, including potential donors
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of general conservation and preservation techniques, with specific focus on fossil/sub-fossil bone
  • Knowledge of best practices for natural history museum collections
  • Knowledge of health and safety practices in fossil conservation and preparation
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Work effectively in a diverse community of staff and public visitors
  • Ability to supervise and train volunteers and student interns, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment
  • Have thorough knowledge of museum policies, practices, procedures, and ethics
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated towards job duties
  • Ability to work as a team member and take direction from other staff and supervisors
  • Ability to have varied work schedule on occasion as required

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, paleontology, geology, earth sciences, biological sciences, or related field from an accredited institution
  • Demonstrated experience in natural history conservation (or other experience useable at discretion of Head of Collections & Conservation)

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Work may be performed in a field/museum exhibit environment, collections/laboratory environment, and office environment
  • Moderate physical activity; required handling of average weight objects up to approximately 25 lbs. and/or standing/walking on average of four hours per day
  • Limited exposure to physical and health risks related to job duties (e.g., handling chemicals)

Title: Maintenance

Job Description: Responsible for assisting in maintaining the building, grounds and museum equipment at The Mammoth Site. Adheres to safety and preventative maintenance systems and processes in the support of the museum.

Starting Wage: $17.00 – $19.00 FT/Hourly (based on experience) + Benefits

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Routinely surveys the buildings and grounds to identify and perform day-to-day maintenance of facilities and preventative maintenance/repairs
  • Maintains the grounds, removes weeds, plants lawns, shrubs and flowers as needed. Carries out the seeding, fertilizing, watering as well as weed and pest control of the grounds
  • Remove snow and ice from walkways and parking lots
  • Assist with moving museum collections
  • Construct new exhibit, educational and research materials as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills:

  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of power equipment such as mowers, trimmers, drills, saws, etc.
  • Ability to be flexible in project flow
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds with a twisting motion in a safe way
  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to understand and follow blueprints and instructions
  • Broad knowledge of construction methods using various mediums (wood, steel, copper, etc.)
