Job Description
The Gift Shop Assistant Manager assists with the day-to-day operation of The Mammoth Site Gift Shop, including purchasing, inventory, merchandising, retail and online sales, customer service, and supervision of assigned staff. The position helps ensure the gift shop is organized, well-stocked, and operated in accordance with The Mammoth Site policies and procedures.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Assist with daily gift shop operations, including retail and online sales.
- Assist with purchasing, pricing, receiving, stocking, and maintaining appropriate levels of inventory.
- Assist with researching new products, product lines, and vendors appropriate for The Mammoth Site.
- Maintain attractive merchandise displays and an organized shopping environment.
- Monitor sales and inventory and assist with reports as needed.
- Assist with Shopify Point of Sale operations, loss prevention, and proper cash-handling procedures.
- Provide day-to-day supervision of assigned staff and assist with training, scheduling needs, workflow, and productivity.
- Train employees on gift shop procedures, Shopify POS, stocking, merchandising, and customer service.
- Ensure opening and closing procedures are completed properly.
- Provide excellent customer service and professionally handle guest questions, comments, and complaints.
- Maintain positive working relationships with guests, staff, volunteers, and vendors.
- Give guided tours and assist with other visitor services as needed.
- Follow all Mammoth Site policies and safety procedures and perform other duties as assigned.

- Experience with retail sales, cash handling, and point-of-sale systems.
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment where the majority of the shift is spent standing, with frequent bending and lifting.
Preferred Skills
- Previous retail supervisory or leadership experience.
- Experience with Shopify Point of Sale, purchasing, or inventory management.
- Store planning and merchandise presentation experience.
- General knowledge of or an interest in learning about paleontology, geology, archaeology, or natural history.
